WE ARE BACK.. this time Hong Kong & Beijing December 2017-Jan 2018

Greetings from Hong Kong!  We (Barbara and Bruce) are once again in parts of China, where she will be teaching in both Hong Kong and Beijing, and I will be wandering about in search of interesting sights, insights, experiences, people, and of course tasty foods.  

We are beginning our time in Asia here in Hong Kong.  We are staying in the Mei Ho House, part of the Youth Hostel "chain."  You can see the house (in the foreground in the photo below, with the reddish wall), with many high-rise apartment buildings in Kowloon (in the background) (Kowloon is across the bay from Hong Kong proper).  

A nice place to stay, more like a medium-sized hotel at budget rates (for Hong Kong at least), which Barbara had enjoyed in an earlier stay on her own--more comfy than the long-ago dormitory style lodgings youth hostels often offered.  I think we're the oldest folks staying here, but there are also some young families as well as pack-backing singles.

We'll be sending out a new posting, with more photos, every couple of days, and hope some of you on our mailing list will follow our adventures with whatever time and interest allows!

For now, Barbara and I wish you a good New Year, new possibilities for 2018, and a Merry Christmas (and that those of you who observe Hannukah, as we do, enjoyed the beauty of the candle-lighting each night).  

Barbara will be teaching over the Christmas holidays, but I'll be going to the Filipino service at the Anglican Cathedral here in Hong Kong on Christmas Eve, as well as one or two of the more evangelical Protestant services with mixed English and Canto (Cantonese) languages and participants (one, it being Hong Kong, meets on the 75th floor of a downtown skyscraper!).

SHANGHAI- ARRIVALS AND IMPRESSIONS

I am writing this on our second day in Shanghai… jet-lag     fatigue still haunts us, but not as fiercely as day 1, when we both collapsed into deep sleep by mid-afternoon- something I rarely am able to do easily at home.     For those who are curious, it was a long-- long – long – long flight. We had a brief stop in Seattle, where we were able to greet Mt. Rainier from the plane window and the Olympic mountains from the airport. The flight was not fully packed and passengers were friendly and seemed to be either Chinese nationals or Chinese Americans traveling with small children to visit surviving parents living in Shanghai. We arrived at night, got to the hotel and after briefly unpacking, we fell into bed, and then woke up about 3 am. RANDOM THOUGHTS AND RANDOM PHOTOS…

Yin Yang- the Importance of Balance/Harmony We have been back about 2 weeks, my/our jet lag has abated, I no longer have to remind myself to make sure there is enough- or any- toilet paper before squatting or sitting.  And  that it is now perfectly fine (in fact expected) to put the used paper into the toilet itself, rather than the handy wastepaper basket that is usually near-by. (Cultural note, while the term ‘toilet’ might be considered a bit too ‘personal’ in the US, it is the English term used in China.. .and perhaps not as confusing as the term ‘bathroom’ that is used in the US).   We were welcomed back home by unusual and extremely hot weather combined with horrible air quality, although I suspect our time in Beijing made it seem not quite as intense, in comparison (sometimes distant buildings visible the day before had disappeared into the smoggy air by the next day).  I have been continuing my learning and reading about cultural differences betw...

AND THERE WAS THE FOOD....

Minneapolis Art Shanties  It is snowing outside, a beautiful Minnesota winter snow-- not too cold but definitely not a day to drive anywhere. It feels like a fairly gentle return home, the long, dark nights make getting back on a local sleep cycle easier. The weather has been cold but the snow is beautiful. As always, it has taken time to adjust to a house with many rooms to inhabit, many more ‘things’ than we need, many tasks, responsibilities and meetings as well as reconnecting with friends and community.   But, before signing off for this particular visit, I want to end with some additional food thoughts and details. Eating in Hong Kong and Beijing is a fun and at times,   We got to practice being flexible and taking our time reading menus, pointing at photos and using our phone apps that could translate spoken and written Mandarin to English.
